Environmental

Air, water, waste

Environmental measurement takes place outdoors or in plant installations, where the instrument sees the full annual temperature range. In this application thermal stability determines whether the data is usable at all. Evolve Sensing configures UV-Vis, NIR and dual-spectrometer platforms for gas monitoring, water quality, agriculture, sorting and field chemistry.

Typical measurements

Differential optical absorption spectroscopy

Open-path measurement of trace gases across a plant boundary, day and night, in all weather conditions.

Water and wastewater quality

UV absorbance for nitrate, organics and turbidity, plus colorimetric chemistry, often in an unattended installation.

Gas and emissions monitoring

Absorption or emission features measured against a baseline that must remain stable through temperature, humidity and lamp aging.

Agriculture and food

Visible and NIR reflectance or absorbance for sorting, quality checks and material identification at line speed.

Sorting and recycling

NIR classification of polymers and materials at line speed, where a misclassification contaminates a bale.

Soil and site chemistry

Reflectance and elemental measurement in the field rather than in the laboratory.

Selection criteria

Specifications that matter in this application

Every spectrometer datasheet leads with wavelength range. In this application it is rarely the limiting specification. The following specifications are:

  • Thermal drift across a 40 °C ambient swing
  • Mechanical stability under vibration, transport and mounting loads
  • Long unattended run time and clean recovery from power cycles
  • Sealed, rugged construction
  • Path length, throughput and source stability, because the optics around the spectrometer determine the detection limit

Platform choices

Configurable spectrometer engines for environmental instruments

A wastewater analyzer, a handheld material identifier, a gas monitor and an agricultural reflectance head all use spectroscopy, and their optical designs have little in common. Evolve Sensing therefore supplies configurable benches rather than a single analyzer design.

  • SmartEngine for flexible UV-Vis-NIR in laboratory, industrial and OEM instruments
  • HummingBird, SilverBullet and PocketHawk where the enclosure is small and the power budget is limited
  • SideWinder for InGaAs NIR on polymers, organics, agricultural products and soils
  • DragonFly where a DLP-based NIR bench suits the signal and the cost model
  • Dual spectrometer systems when one instrument has to cover UV-Vis and NIR together

Unattended operation

Acquisition for long-duration monitoring

Onboard memory, ring-buffer and batch acquisition keep the spectral record continuous when the host is busy or the link is slow, and Ethernet-ready configurations give a fixed installation a control architecture that plant systems already support. Ethernet-ready spectrometers →

Scope

Scope of supply

A spectrometer is not a certified method. Detection limits and selectivity depend on the sample matrix, optical path, source, calibration standards, chemometric model, temperature, fouling and maintenance schedule. Evolve Sensing supplies the spectrometer engine and optical sensing components that go into a validated environmental measurement system, and identifies which parts of that validation remain with the system builder.

In depth

Spectrometers in environmental

Environmental monitoring asks a spectrometer to work outdoors, unattended and for long periods. Water, air and soil each have characteristic absorption and emission features, and a field instrument measures them in place. Compact spectrometers with low power draw and stable wavelength calibration are suited for this work.

Water quality

Nitrate absorbs strongly in the UV between about 200 and 240 nm. In-situ UV sensors record the full absorbance spectrum and fit it to separate nitrate from dissolved organic matter and turbidity, which also attenuate light in that region. Absorbance at 254 nm, often reported as SAC254, serves as a surrogate for dissolved organic carbon in drinking water and wastewater treatment.

Fluorescence adds biological information. Chlorophyll-a excited in the blue emits near 685 nm, and phycocyanin from cyanobacteria emits near 650 nm when excited in the orange. Continuous readings of both help utilities and researchers follow algal growth in lakes and reservoirs.

Air quality and emissions

Differential optical absorption spectroscopy, or DOAS, measures trace gases along an open light path of hundreds of meters to several kilometers. The method fits the narrow absorption structures of each gas and removes broad attenuation from aerosols and scattering. Nitrogen dioxide is retrieved in the 400 to 460 nm band, and sulfur dioxide and ozone in the UV below 340 nm. Long paths bring detection limits into the parts-per-billion range. Retrieval quality depends on optical resolution near 0.5 nm and on wavelength stability, since a small shift leaves residual structure in the fit.

Continuous emission monitoring applies the same physics inside a stack or exhaust duct. Nitric oxide, ammonia and sulfur dioxide all absorb between about 190 and 230 nm, so a deep-UV spectrometer can measure the three gases together in one short-path cell.

Soil and agriculture

NIR reflectance reports soil moisture, organic matter and mineralogy. Water absorbs near 1450 and 1940 nm. Clay minerals show an Al-OH feature near 2200 nm, and carbonates absorb near 2340 nm. Calibration models built from laboratory reference data then predict these properties from field spectra, with no chemical preparation. Crop and vegetation studies use visible and NIR reflectance, including the red edge between about 690 and 740 nm, as an indicator of chlorophyll content and plant stress.

Recycling and material sorting

Automated sorting lines identify plastics by their NIR spectra. C-H overtone bands near 1200 nm and 1700 nm differ between PET, HDPE, PP, PS and PVC, which lets a spectrometer classify each item in milliseconds as it passes on a conveyor. The 900 to 1700 nm range of an InGaAs spectrometer covers these bands. Plastics pigmented with carbon black absorb across the NIR, so lines that handle them add other sensing methods.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can Evolve supply a complete regulatory analyzer?
Evolve Sensing supplies spectrometer platforms and the optical-sensing engineering around them. A regulatory analyzer requires method-specific validation, calibration and system-level qualification, which Evolve can support but not certify.
Which wavelength range is best for environmental monitoring?
It depends on the analyte, the matrix, the source and the optical path. UV absorption, visible colorimetry, fluorescence and NIR reflectance are each used in different systems. Send the measurement details and an engineer will recommend a range.
Can these platforms be embedded in an OEM instrument?
Yes. The compact benches are designed for embedded use, and the SDK, programmable I/O and Ethernet-ready options support OEM integration.
